Research studies that examine the pathophysiology of trauma, innovations in resuscitation techniques, and ongoing treatment strategies for trauma patients are essential for the improvement of care for this population. Before the establishment of this Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) there were some trauma patients who were not recruited into any study, and no blood samples were taken for future analysis. This represented a missed opportunity for trauma research. The standardized banking of blood samples from all trauma patients that fit eligibility criteria in this SOP allows the future design of studies that further investigate the pathophysiology of trauma. Blood samples will be taken as close to the time of patients’ arrival in ED and then again 24 hours following this.
