NIHR Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre theme lead Mr Tony Belli and researcher Dr Michael Grey appeared on BBC Breakfast this morning to discuss research into head injuries.
The appearance followed the controversy around Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris being knocked unconscious during Sunday’s match against Everton. The Frenchman was not substituted, drawing criticism from a number of organisations, including FIFA and the PFA.
Mr Belli explained the risks of continuing to play after being knocked out, and outlined how he wants to develop a more objective test for concussion. A study which could lead to such a test is in development by SRMRC.
Dr Grey said Britain lags behind countries like Canada in dealing with head injuries in sports but is catching up.
