SRMRC Director Professor Sir Keith Porter has spoken with the BBC about how military and civilian trauma experts at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham have helped develop treatments for seriously injured military personnel.
Sir Keith, who is the country’s only professor of clinical traumatology, explained how some of the military patients had multiple, complex injuries caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
He said ongoing work into developing treatment of these injuries is based on the collaboration between military and civilian experts: “We’ve had to debate and discuss how to manage these complex problems and draw on the experience of military surgeons on an international level, including the US where there’s big exposure to trauma.”
“Fundamentally there are some complex problems many clinicians will not have been exposed to.”
