National Institute for Health Research Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (NIHR SRMRC) theme lead Professor Robin May has been recognised by the Royal Society.
Professor May, SRMRC theme lead for microbiology, was among the names when 19 new Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award holders were announced.
Jointly funded by the Wolfson Foundation and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), the award scheme aims to provide universities with additional support to enable them to attract science talent from overseas and retain respected UK scientists of outstanding achievement and potential.
Professor May, who is also Professor in Infectious Diseases at the University of Birmingham, Institute of Microbiology and Infection and the School of Biosciences, has been recognised for his work in understanding the evolution of virulence in fungal pathogens.
He said: “I’m thrilled, surprised and very honoured to receive this award.
“I’d also very much like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous effort and dedication of the people in my research team over the last ten years, to whom this prize really belongs.
“It is a pleasure and a privilege to work with such an enthusiastic bunch of people and very pleasing to see their hard work recognised in this way by the Royal Society.”
