The NIHR Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (SRMRC) are holding a Dissemination & Networking Day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham on Friday, 11 March.
Professor Ian Roberts, MB BCh FRCP FPH, will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will also feature a packed programme of expert talks from NIHR SRMRC researchers and collaborators on the wide-ranging work undertaken during the Centre’s first five years.
Professor Roberts, Professor of Epidemiology & Public Health and co-director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, will talk about the importance of clinical trials in trauma care.
He first trained as a paediatrician and then in epidemiology at the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and at McGill University, Canada.
He established and is co-ordinating editor of the Cochrane Injuries Group, an international network of individuals that prepares and maintains systematic reviews of the effectiveness of interventions in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injury.
He is principal investigator of the CRASH trials, large international randomised controlled trials that seek better ways to treat seriously injured trauma patients.
His current focus is the conduct of large scale trials of tranexamic acid in the management of acute severe bleeding.
He is also co-author with Phil Edwards of The Energy Glut – a book about the politics of fatness.
