If you’d like to meet our team and get a taster of the work we do, join us at UHB’s annual Research Showcase on Friday.

We’ll be demonstrating some of the technology we use to provide better care for military and civilian patients at the event, which takes place between 10am and 3pm in the main entrance of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

You’ll have the chance to see some of the devices we use to conduct our research as well as ask the team questions about their work and find out how you can get involved in research yourself.

Professor Tony Belli, Director of the SRMRC, said: “The Showcase is an excellent opportunity for patients, visitors and staff in other areas of the hospital to see what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ in research at the Trust.

“Come and meet the SRMRC team and find out more about the array of exciting studies we’re conducting to improve trauma patient care.”

As part of our REpetitive COncussion in Sport (RECOS) study we’ll be showing you how one device, a pupillometer, can be used pitch side in rugby to spot the signs of concussion without a transfer to hospital.

We’ll also be demonstrating how a specially designed hand-held microscope placed under the tongue can potentially determine the prognosis or treatment of patients who are bleeding after injury. Plus you can find out how infra-red technology could enable us to non-invasively monitor tissue oxygenation and the flow of blood in trauma patients.

Other attractions at Friday’s Research Showcase include a dance demonstration from the chronic heart disease team and patients, the chance to find out the effects e-cigarettes have on your lung cell biology and what a fatty liver looks and feels like.
